Check Out All The Canceled Netflix Original Shows In 2021

The OTT platform (and one of the most popular one’s) Netflix has all kinds of shows present on it for you to watch. There are a few of its original shows as well but this year Netflix is cancelling a few of its shows and here’s what you are not going to miss.

While several of its shows like Cobra Kai, Bridgerton and many others are getting new seasons and fans will be thrilled seeing their favorite characters, some of its show couldn’t make it and are now getting canceled this year in 2021. With the pandemic hitting the world last year, OTT platforms came up with ample opportunities and almost everyone bought a subscription of these platforms and several other platforms rose up to give Netflix some competition. But with complete lockdown, films and TV shows couldn’t be shot and it ended up in budget cuts and lots of people losing their work.

Netflix though has been cancelling its shows (sometimes abruptly) even before the pandemic hit the world. Some of the shows which got canceled in 2020 are ‘The chilling adventures of Sabrina’ and the controversial ‘Insatiable’. Along with this, the platform also announced that some of its shows will conclude with the upcoming seasons like ‘Ozark’, ‘Atypical’ and ‘The Crown’.

While fans may still be recovering over last year’s cancellations, adding to the list of woes this year’s cancellations also don’t do much good. But on the positive side, Netflix also announced that several of its show will be getting new seasons like ‘Ginny and Georgia’ and ‘Falling Sunset’. But now let’s discuss about the list of shows cancelled in 2021 (so far).

THE IRREGULARS

Clearly the most shocking show Netflix has decided to cancel this year would be ‘The Irregulars’. This British drama series is based on a collection of three Sherlock Holmes novels by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The show was based on the Victorian Era and was eight episodes long with the storyline revolving around a bunch of people (Irregulars) working for Dr Watson and are trying to save London from super natural powers and trying to find the elusive Holmes. However on May 4, 2021 Netflix announced that a 2nd season won’t be coming up.

Netflix Original Show

The show was able to set up a certain fan base and also gathered some appreciation in its short run, so cancelling it is a very step to take at this point of time. The show managed to beat Marvel’s ‘Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ and retained 1st position in ‘Nielsen’s weekly Top 10 chart for original streaming shows’. So cancelling it is as confusing as it can get, maybe because of the decline in its viewership after initial release might be the reason.

The Duchess

Another one of its British Netflix Original shows was cancelled on April 29, 2021. Created by and also starring Katherine Ryan, the show basically circled around Ryan’s character of a mom who’s chaotic and confused and is not sure what she wants – especially whether she should have a child with her Ex or not. Being a combination of ‘quirky fun’ and ‘drama’, the show didn’t do well with the critics. One of the critics called it a ‘tasteless misfire’. So it’s very much possible that all these negatives reviews led to the cancellation of the show.

Ryan also revealed the reason for its cancellation in Vicky Pattinson’s The Secret To… show where she said “Netflix didn’t want to continue because not enough people watched it. I think something like 10 million people watched it in 28 days and that wasn’t enough”.

MONARCA

Another show which won’t be getting a chance to come back with another season is a Mexican drama ‘Monarca’ but the makers stated that they haven’t received any official notice. Its first season released in September 2019, followed by a second season in January, 2021. The makers of the show ‘Osvaldo Benavides and Irene Azeual’  posted on their IG handle in March that it’s time to say goodbye and an official announcement came soon after 2 days through ‘Mexican culture and entertainment outlet Sensacine’. This came as a total surprise especially because how the 2nd season ended.

LA REVOLUTION

This is a French based drama that’s a combination of ‘supernatural powers’ and ‘history’ and it was unfortunate the series couldn’t continue their streaming services. This was released in October 2020 and the plot centers around a virus that invades in aristocracy and messes up the higher people to kill the lower ones. While it was one of the biggest Netflix productions to come out from France, the series get a chance to showcase more on the streaming partner.

THE LAST KINGDOM (With one upcoming season)

The show started off as a BBC series in 2015, but eventually joined hands with Netflix originals. This historical fiction came into Netflix in 2018 and is a byproduct of the novel series “The Saxton Stories” by “Bernard Cornwell”. The story is based on the time period when Danish rule was established in ‘Jorvik’ and the story displays the struggle between Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Wessex and the Vikings that constantly attack southern England.

But unlike the other shows that have been cancelled, The Last Kingdom is surely getting one more season. The forthcoming season (Season 5) was announced in July, 2020 and it wasn’t supposed to be its final season until this year. While it’s currently being filmed in Hungary, the show received a lot of accolades while its entire streaming journey on Netflix and fans are also eagerly waiting to see how they wrap up the final season.

SPECIAL (With one upcoming season)

Netflix is also preparing to remove a comedy show  “Special” which is a short form series based on “I am Special: And The Other Lies We Tell Ourselves” which is going to have a 2nd and final season premiere on May 20, 2021. Along with being the writer, Ryan O’Connell also stars as a titular character who narrates the uplifting tale of a gay man with mild cerebral palsy trying to regain his identity and metamorphose his life. While the 2nd season was announced sometime ago, the decision to cancel it after that has been taken recently. With a positive response from fans, it’s still unclear why Netflix decided to cancel it.
