One of the original stars from Robert Zemeckis‘ iconic time-travel Back of the Future, says she wants to take the direction of the film version of the stage musical in her hands. Back to the Future took over millions of hearts wrapped a lot of love since it made her debut in 1985.

Zemeckis and screenwriter Bob Gale have talked about it many times, they have straight denied that Back to Future has no future, there will be no sequel or reboot of the series. However, earlier this year new production arrived in England and turned the Back to Future into a musical. Unfortunately, the musical’s lifespan was cut short not long after its premiere at the Manchester Opera House, and all the credits for this go to the coronavirus pandemic. But the good part is that the show is going to continue next spring, with dates already confirmed for London, May.

Recently Lea Thompson – the actress who portrayed the role of Marty McFly’s mother, Lorraine Baines had an interview with Movieweb in which she revealed that not only Universal is thinking about a sequel of the Back to the Future series, she would get the chance to take the direction of the steel in her hands. With this she also shared her wish of giving her daughter Zoey, to play the role of Lorraine, should such a big-screen adaptation occur.

The Back To The Future Star Started As A Director

Many people don’t know that Thompson has managed to do a lot of good work in the field of direction. The Back to the Future star made her debut as a director with The Year of Spectacular Men in 2017. While Thompson feels confident that Universal is going to release a feature film adaptation of the musical, it does seem a little too early for such a project to be given the green light.

The musical of the series barely got some time to create that buzz or interest because the Coronavirus pandemic forced production to shut down.

Even if a Back to the Future film adaptation of the musical became a reality, the likelihood of Thompson being selected seems very slim. It’s safe to say that fans would want Robert Zemeckis to do the honors, but barring that, and despite Thompson’s experience directing TV, Hollywood has numerous other candidates with more prestigious track records to choose from.
