Disney Has No Plans For The New Mutants To Join MCU

Josh Boone, director of New Mutants has confirmed that Disney has no plans for the spinoff of X-Men to join MCU.

Based on the comics of the early 80s by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod, the long-awaited New Mutants has suffered many delays. It was filmed 3 years ago and now finally has made its way to theaters. The theaters are halted from the coronavirus shut down. Now Disney has intended for New Mutants to be the film that will usher audiences back to the big screens. The film has earned the biggest opening day in the US since the theaters have reopened.

The New Mutants focused on 5 gifted teenage mutants. The mutants are being played by Anya Taylor-Jo, Maisie Williams, Charlie Heaton, Blu Hunt, and Henry Zaga. They are taken to a secret lab in an asylum that is abandoned. They must escape there using their newly discovered powers and strengths.

Boone planned for the movie to go a distinct direction from most superhero movies, giving rise to more of a cliff-hanger with horror elements. The film was implied to be the first of a trilogy that would pursue the same horror tone, but the proposal was banned after facing continual uncertainties in major part due to the Disney-Fox merger. Since Disney’s 2019 accession of Fox in a $71.3 billion contract, fans have eagerly expected for Fox’s X-verse to prevail in the same universe as Disney’s Marvel superheroes. However, Disney does not appear to be communicating that idea for the time being.

No Integration For The New Mutants Into The MCU

In an interview with Den of Geek, Boone verifies that Disney has not had any proposals to integrate The New Mutants into the MCU. When inquired if there have been any efficient talks with Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige about the chance of retconning The New Mutants into the MCU, Boone said:

“No, not at all. I just really finished the process we’d already gotten kind of 70% of the way through before the merger happened. It was nice to have the retrospect of the year where I was off working on The Stand and doing other things to come back and look at it because we sat there and did other little things here and there.”

Disney Has No Plans For The New Mutants To Join MCU 1 Entertainment

Though there was assumption New Mutants could enlist the MCU, it isn’t startling to learn this is the case. With the exception of Deadpool, Disney reportedly plans to reboot all of the X-Men personalities as the property finally becomes a part of the MCU. For that reason, it was constantly unlikely New Mutants was incorporated into Disney’s huge franchise. Marvel Studios has their own notions for the direction they want to take the X-Men in, and it’s simpler to just rub the slate clean and start fresh.

Also, it’s worth remembering The New Mutants has not earned favorable reviews, despite being such a highly-anticipated film. The widespread consensus is that it’s a generic comic book modification that doesn’t leave much of an opinion. The comic’s co-creator McLeod even crashed The New Mutants for misspelling his name in the prestige. Boone’s movie occurs in its own world.
