During that time, Game Of Thrones gave us some of the biggest and most surprising plot twists of all times. Based on the fantasy novel series named “A Song Of Ice And Fire” by George R. R. Martin, Game Of Thrones was a thrilling action-packed series filled with thrill and a chain of shocking turn of events with killing off the most unexpected characters being a trend.

Even though Game Of Thrones ended almost 2 years ago, the stars and people associated with it still continue to make strange revelations about the show that no one could ever have thought about. The latest revelation can from Hannah Waddingham, who played the role of Septa Unella, regarding the original plot for her death which would have been far beyond disturbing which led to it later being dropped.

What Happened To Septa Unella?

Unella was a Septa of the Faith Of The Seven and a devoted follower of High Sparrow. During season 5 of Game Of Thrones, we saw Cersei Lannister getting arrested by the High Sparrow and being imprisoned under the Great Sept of Baelor. Following Cersei’s confession to Septa Unella, came her “Walk of Shame”. Although Game of Thrones had never been a family friendly show, but this particular incident made season 5 of Game Of Thrones especially dark and disturbing compared to the rest of the series.

Cersei’s hairs were cut short, she was stripped naked, and then she was forced to walk through the streets of King’s Landing. Septa Unella was instrumental in making this happen and she was also present during Cersei’s march, ringing a bell to attract an audience and shouting “Shame!”.

The tables turned on Unella after the fall of the Great Sept of Baelor when Cersei takes her revenge on her by waterboarding her with wine while reminding her how Cersei told her that the last thing she sees is Cersei’s face and then leaving her behind to be tortured by Ser Gregor Clegane a.k.a. The Mountain. However, the original plans that the writers had for her death were far more gruesome and brutal.

Hannah Waddingham recently spoke with Collider and revealed that Unella’s original fate in Game Of Thrones was not the wine waterboarding that we saw in the final episode of season 5, but sexual violence at the hands of The Mountain.

“She was meant to be raped by The Mountain, and I think they’d had so many complaints about the rape of Sansa that they chose not to go with it. I think they possibly changed it when I was mid-air flying to Belfast because suddenly I got sent these new sides that said that I would need a wetsuit top. And I thought they’d sent me the wrong bits. And sure enough, when I got there, I was then put in a wetsuit top and I was like, ‘Because?’ And they went, ‘Oh, it’s waterboarding instead.'” She stated.

As far as the question of sexual violence goes, Game Of Thrones was always in controversy because of it, and that got a lot disturbing at a point in time. I think we can all be thankful that Septa Unellla’s end was changed to a little less disturbing manner even though she didn’t deserve it.
